Vastu Shastra, often referred to simply as Vastu, is an ancient Indian architectural and design philosophy that encompasses principles believed to harmonize human habitats with natural forces and energies. Rooted in ancient Vedic texts, Vastu Shastra guides the planning and construction of buildings, homes, temples, and other structures to optimize the well-being and prosperity of the occupants. Central to Vastu is the concept of balance and alignment with the five elements—earth, water, fire, air, and space—along with the cosmic energies of the sun, moon, and planets. The principles of Vastu encompass various aspects, including site selection, layout, room placement, directionality, and spatial organization. For instance, the cardinal directions play a crucial role, with each direction associated with specific elements and energies. Proper orientation of rooms, entrances, and windows in alignment with these directions is believed to enhance the flow of positive energy (prana) and promote harmony. Vastu also emphasizes the importance of symmetry, proportion, and aesthetics in design, aiming to create spaces that are conducive to health, happiness, and prosperity.
